This year marks the centenary of the laying of the foundation stone of the Experiment Sericulture Station, now belonging to the Agriculture and Environment Research Centre of CREA, the Italian research institute on agri-food. It was indeed 1923, when the Station – located in the centre of Padua since its foundation in 1871 – was transferred to its current location.
Created to meet the need to spread healthy silkworm eggs, following the pebrine epidemic in Europe, it has survived the crises that have affected sericulture, always emerging with renewed vigour. It was established with limited personnel and funds, but was led by an extraordinary director and distinguished scientist, Enrico Verson, for about fifty years. It survived two world wars that brought an end to an era and a type of agriculture in which sericulture represented a fundamental sector for exports. It was brilliantly led again in the 1980s by Glauco Reali, during a period when major projects were launched for revival and mechanization, later undermined by Chinese silk dumping and environmental pollution issues. From the 1990s to 2008, it rose from the ashes, investing in a multi-sector restructuring project, strongly supported by the institutions of the city of Padua, which led to the birth of the Esapolis Museum and the restoration of the current CREA building, making it efficient, modern, and energy self-sufficient.
The work of generations of technicians and researchers operating within it has finally been rewarded in the last twenty years by a renewed interest in silk as a biomaterial and textile fibre, and in the mulberry tree as a multifunctional plant in a circular economy perspective, along with an increasing commitment from institutions and the business world for the reconstitution and revitalization of the Italian silk supply chain, with Veneto leading the way for other regions as well.
In conclusion, these first 100 years are celebrated in an atmosphere of great confidence in the future of silkworms and “made in Italy” silk.
