{"id":10442,"date":"2021-03-14T20:06:07","date_gmt":"2021-03-14T19:06:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/serinnovation.it\/?p=10442"},"modified":"2022-12-13T11:05:55","modified_gmt":"2022-12-13T10:05:55","slug":"animals-silkworm-pupae-oil-antimicrobial-activity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/serinnovation.it\/en\/animals-silkworm-pupae-oil-antimicrobial-activity\/","title":{"rendered":"From silkworm pupae, the production of oil with antimicrobial activity"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5><strong>Study published in the international journal \u201cAnimals\u201d,\u00a0particularly interesting for the feed industry.<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnimals\u201d is a journal devoted entirely to animals, including zoology and veterinary sciences, published by MPD monthly; it is open-access and peer-reviewed.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #47a847;\"><strong>Mechanical Processing of <em>Hermetia illucens<\/em> Larvae and <em>Bombyx mori<\/em> Pupae Produces Oils with Antimicrobial Activity<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>SIMPLE SUMMARY<\/p>\n<p>Insect rearing and processing are widely studied to provide solutions to the increasing demand for proteins caused by a growing human population.<br \/>\nIt has been demonstrated that<strong> insect meal can be introduced into the feed ratio of livestock<\/strong> and its exploitation can limit the environmental impact of animal husbandry.<br \/>\nWhen their ecological footprint is analyzed, insects are considered \u201cbiorefineries\u201d able to generate <strong>multiple economic outputs for the food industry<\/strong>.<br \/>\nFat and antimicrobial peptides contained in the insect oil can represent <strong>important resources to treat animal diseases<\/strong>, e.g., allowing to <strong>reduce antibiotic overuse<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In this paper we focused on<strong> two insects exploitable both for protein and oil production<\/strong>: the black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) and the domestic silkworm.<br \/>\nAs the diet regimen remarkably affects the fat composition of the insects, both BSFL and silkworm larvae were reared on plant-based diets. Silkworms were fed mulberry leaves, while BSFL were reared on a diet composed of leftover vegetables and fruit, in the perspective of their bioconversion and valorization.<br \/>\nThe best technique to maximize the oil extraction yield was defined for BSFL and applied to the silkworm pupae.<br \/>\n<strong>An antimicrobial activity of the oil against some bacterial species was demonstrated<\/strong> in both insects and compared.<\/p>\n<p>ABSTRACT<\/p>\n<p>The aim of this work was to <strong>develop processing methods that safeguard the quality and antimicrobial properties of<em> H. illucens<\/em> and<em> B. mori<\/em> oils<\/strong>.<br \/>\nWe adopted a vegetable diet for both insects: leftover vegetables and fruit for <em>H. illucens<\/em> and mulberry leaves for <em>B. mori<\/em>. First, alternative techniques to obtain a good oil extraction yield from the dried biomass of <em>H. illucens<\/em> larvae were tested. Traditional pressing resulted to be the best system to<strong> maximize the oil yield<\/strong> and it was successfully applied to <em>B. mori<\/em> pupae.<br \/>\nOil quality resulted comparable to that obtained with other extraction methods described in the literature. In the case of <em>B. mori<\/em> pupae, different treatments and preservation periods were investigated to evaluate their<strong> influence on the oil composition and quality<\/strong>.
