The International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property, known as AIPPI (Association Internationale pour la Protection de la Propriété Intellectuelle), is the world’s leading non-profit association dedicated to the development and improvement of laws for the protection of intellectual property. It is a politically neutral non-profit organisation with headquarters in Switzerland and more than 8,000 members worldwide from over 110 countries.

Given the increasing focus on the intersection of intellectual property and genetic resources, traditional knowledge and traditional cultural expressions, AIPPI and ASIPI (Asociación interamericana de la propiedad intelectual | Inter-American Association of Intellectual Property) have organised a webinar series to explore these important and developing topics. This series is part of the ongoing AIPPI-ASIPI collaboration signed at the AIPPI World Congress 2022 in San Francisco and focuses on the EU perspective and the international level.

The second part of this webinar, ‘The Intersection of Intellectual Property, Cultural Heritage and Traditional Cultural Expressions from a European Perspective’, will be led by moderator Audrey Williams and will feature as speakers:

  • Daphne Zografos Johnsson, Senior Legal Officer at the World Intellectual Property Organisation (World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO)
  • Silvia Cappellozza CREA Agriculture and Environment Director – Laboratory of Sericulture of Padua, with the speech “European silk cultural heritage and traditional cultural expressions: the uncertain limit of the intellectual property. The study case of the Aracne project”.

The two talks will provide an overview of the ongoing discussions at WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organisation) on the protection of traditional cultural expressions and a draft international instrument to protect them, as well as an introduction to the Horizon Aracne project, which supports the role of silk art and cultural heritage on a national and European scale.
