In the December 2023 issue of the magazine “Vita in campagna” (Life in the Countryside) an article in the “Multifunctionality” section provides news about a facilitating machine for silkworm rearing in the early larval instars.
Within the framework of the Project “Silk”: Innovation in tradition, re-launching silkworm rearing through new production and processing systems (RDP 2014-20 Region Friuli-Venezia Giulia), the University of Udine, prof. Rino Gubiani, in collaboration with CREA, Laboratory of Sericulture of Padua, has realised a small prototype for rearing moderate quantities of silkworms up to the third instar, to make feeding and cleaning operations easier..
The prototype is dedicated above all to didactic-demonstrative farms and presents a rather low level of mechanisation, so much so that it can even be realised with modest metal carpentry work and relative expense. The prototype can also be adapted to the rearing of older instar larvae: in this case, it can accommodate an even more limited number of silkworm larvae.
This prototype can also contribute to the dissemination of the educational activities envisaged in the ARACNE project, and for this reason the two projects may present interesting synergies.
The prototype can be seen at the didactic farm ‘Piccola fattoria Cumugnai’ in Aquileia (UD), owned by Alessio Sverzut. The drawings and pictures are reported in the magazine ‘Vita in Campagna’.
